The ‘second wave’ of coronavirus, along with the usual winter pressures faced by care providers, residential homes and the NHS, has resulted in an urgent appeal for health and care workers in Devon.

A recruitment drive has been launched for temporary and permanent positions with working hours during the day, evenings and across weekends, in residential settings, hospitals and in people’s homes needed

Applicants could be people who have left the caring profession, or have recently found themselves out of work, or recent college leavers.

Vacancies are also open to people who might not even have considered a career in care before.

A generic picture of a care worker

To become a healthcare assistant you don’t necessarily need qualifications or previous work experience.

For those already registered in the profession, roles in great demand include registered nurses, mental health nurses, social workers, approved mental health practitioners, pharmacists, managers, occupational therapists and other allied health professionals.

Roles are also available in the wider healthcare team including cleaners, chefs, catering assistants, security staff, administration staff, gardeners, porters and other support roles.

A spokesperson for Devon County Council said: “Every winter, care providers, residential homes and the NHS are under pressure as demand for services increases with the onset of cold weather and flu.

“This year that pressure has increased as the coronavirus ‘second wave’ has developed.

“Authorities are now calling on people of all ages and backgrounds – anyone who is caring, compassionate and committed – to help care for vulnerable people across the county.”
