Exeter City will face Championship Sheffield Wednesday at home in the third round of the FA Cup

The Grecians reached round three for only the third time in 15 years after their 3-2 win away to League One Gillingham on Saturday, having previously beaten AFC Fylde in round one 2-1.

And they were drawn to take on Tony Pulis’ men in the draw that was made by Robbie Savage on Monday night.

It is only second time in the last 11 occasions when City have reached round three that they have not been drawn against top flight opposition.

Gillingham vs Exeter City

The Owls currently sit 23rd in the second tier, having begun the season with a six point deduction, and have won just one of their last nine outings.

The two sides have not met since 2012, when the Grecians secured a 2-1 win at home, with City having won seven of the 11 meetings between the two clubs, with three draws and only one defeat.

In fact, City have never lost at home to Sheffield Wednesday, winning five and drawing one of the six encounters dating back to 1969 at St James Park.

Ties will be played on the weekend of Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, and each of the winning teams will pick up £82,000 in prize money as well as securing progress to the fourth round.

Plymouth Argyle meanwhile were drawn away to Championship Huddersfield Town, in what was the first tie out of the hat.
