Police and an off duty paramedic risked their lives to save a woman on a high bridge in North Devon last night.

Taw Bridge in Barnstaple was closed as result of the incident, which took place in “atrocious” and “dangerous” weather conditions.

On Twitter, Police Area Commander Toby Davies said: “Taw Bridge closed late last night as officers dealt with a female on the wrong side of the railings.

“Brilliant effort by officers and an off duty paramedic, putting themselves at risk, to bring the female to safety.

“Weather atrocious/ conditions dangerous. Well done!”

The weather caused problems across the force area, with emergency services called to multiple reports of flooding and road collisions.
