Visitors to Barnstaple were astonished to see a car fully ablaze in the town centre yesterday afternoon (Sunday, December 27).

Tucker Times, who shot the video of the car on fire in The Square, took to social media to warn people to stay away as the accident was causing heavy traffic build-up in the Barnstaple area.

A fire engine was called to the scene at around 3.30pm and fire crews used two breathing apparatus, two hosereel jets and a safety jet to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire was accidental and no one was trapped inside the vehicle or reported injured.

A spokesperson from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: “One fire appliance from Barnstaple was mobilised to reports of a car on fire at the above location.

“The incident involved one private vehicle which was fully damaged by fire. Fire crews used 2 breathing apparatus wearers, two hosereel jets and 1 safety jet to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was accidental.”
