Job Purpose / Summary

To manage all aspects of David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s communications, marketing (internal, external, print and online), and PR output and relationships. To deliver engaging, creative and relevant content across all platforms and to different audiences and stakeholders, working closely with the Head of Fundraising and Head of Programmes and Policy as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Marketing and Communications

Develop and manage a comprehensive marketing and communications plan across all Foundation activities to support and drive Fundraising and Programmes and Policy – crossing direct communications, PR, social media and other channels to market as relevant.
Manage, write, edit and proof-read all content across digital and print communications and marketing (both fundraising and policy / programmes led content). Ensure all copy is engaging, clear, concise and accurate.
In collaboration with the Design and Digital Executive, design, manage and produce an in-house suite of online and printed promotional materials and platforms including leaflets, campaign materials/communications, website, fundraising brochures etc.
Uphold, manage (and develop where necessary) the charity’s brand through our visuals and key Messaging. Monitor all content produced, ensuring editorial quality, consistent style and tone of voice in keeping with the charity’s branding and messaging guidelines.
Act as managing editor of DSWF’s supporter magazine ‘Wildlife Matters’ – managing content, layout and print production.
Work closely with the Head of Fundraising and wider Fundraising and Policy team to develop marketing and fundraising campaign schedule and adhere to agreed schedules and deadlines, developing and delivering creative copy and content ideas and creative marketing campaigns.
Work as part of the broader Fundraising Team to provide marketing support, expertise and guidance.
Liaise with the Head of Policy and Programmes to receive and best utilise updates from conservation project partners and other relevant stakeholders. Work together to ensure appropriate sign-off for technical accuracy from Head of Policy and Programmes where appropriate.
Work with the Design and Digital Executive to manage our image bank (photography) and film content, ensuring appropriate crediting on all output. Pursuing new opportunities to grow the bank and develop new film content based on the needs of the Foundation.
Responsibility for managing systems to regularly analyse marketing activity (including campaigns, website and social media), using appropriate insight and analytics techniques (i.e. google analytics etc.) to help improve the quality and relevance of content to meet the needs of all audiences.
Be aware of external UK and international wildlife charity campaigns and marketing strategies and communicate findings to Head of Fundraising and Head of Policy and Programmes.
Support the Design & Digital Executive to manage the development and output of our monthly e-news and any other general supporter communications, ensuring good management of our output platform (Constant Contact / Mailchimp).
To project manage key areas of work relating to our general marketing functions (i.e. website and social media).

2. PR

Identify and pursue appropriate press and PR opportunities to support the Foundation’s activities and help gain exposure and growth.
Manage all press releases for the Foundation and ensure appropriate circulation for relevant activities to support marketing.
Develop and maintain relationships with a network of press contacts (local and national).

3. Website and Social Media

Overall responsibility for the Foundation’s website in terms of visuals and content, ensuring it is kept up to date in terms of content and in relation to industry trends and development.
Ensure regular reporting of analytics of website performance to help drive activity, learning and improvement.
Line manage the planning, coordinating, commissioning, editing and delivering engaging content across the charity’s social media channels, working closely with the social media team to execute the social media strategy and tailoring content based on results.

4. Budget Management and Administration

Responsibility for setting and management of marketing and communications expenditure budget.
Write timely and accurate Marketing and Communications Report for submission to the Board of Trustees (c. 3 per annum).

5. External Relationships and Suppliers

Manage, maintain and develop relationships with external suppliers including web provider, print, design providers etc.
Ensure best standard and practice from suppliers in line with industry standards, sourcing competitive quotes as relevant.

6. Line Management Responsibilities

Line management of the Design and Digital Executive, ensuring appropriate work levels and management are maintained and managing ongoing performance, workload and development including annual appraisals.

Qualifications

GCSE English and Maths or equivalent
A Level or equivalent level of education

Degree level qualification

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Excellent organisational and project management skills with proven ability to manage numerous projects and pieces of work at one time, working to deadlines whilst maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Proven ability to plan, coordinate and deliver a calendar of effective content across a variety of marketing channels.

Ability to employ different techniques to achieve an end aim (e.g. using persuasive language to encourage donations).

Excellent copywriting skills including creative/conceptual copywriting skills, experience writing for public-facing campaigns and/or advertising, plus keen copy-editing skills

Excellent attention to detail.

Excellent verbal communication and relationship management skills (internal and external with suppliers and PR contacts).

Proven ability to design / manage and produce in-house promotional materials (leaflets, website, fundraising brochures etc) using InDesign or similar.

Strong understanding of social media, how it works, platforms and how it can be utilised for marketing and engagement purposes (i.e. in a professional context and particularly in terms of content creation and distribution).

Strong awareness of national and international current affairs, especially within the conservation and wildlife policy arena’s.

Strong understanding of the print publication processes.

Understanding of issues around data protection, confidentiality and legality in relation to fundraising and conservation landscapes.

Demonstrable ability to pitch and deliver creative ideas for content across a range of media.

Ability to prioritise tasks, working flexibly, alone or within teams to challenging deadlines.

Experience of managing fundraising income and expenditure budgets.

Start-to-finish project management experience, excellent administration and planning skills.

Excellent IT skills and excellent knowledge and experience of MS Word and Excel, iPhoto and database entry/reporting experience.

Good networking skills to be able to identify opportunities to meet relevant people and engage them in the work of the Foundation.

Excellent ability to build, nurture and develop strong professional relationships.

Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Strong analytical and strong problem-solving skills.

Desirable

Experience of setting, negotiating and agreeing contractual terms within a relevant setting.

Experience of working within the art sector and artist community.

Experience of using and updating Raisers Edge (or other charity database software) including benefits of segmentation and targeting.

Line management experience.

Understanding of fundraising landscape, techniques, methods and opportunities.
